Turkeys

When I was asked to contribute towards Chalk Creek Exotic's website by writing a blog, I was a little unsure as to how my limited knowledge of exotic animals was going to be a positive reflection of our operation. Shannon (oldest daughter and the brains behind launching CCE via Facebook and the world wide web) assures me that our followers will be interested in all aspects of our hunting operation as well as our ranching operation. Check in from time and time and read about our country living!

Let's talk turkey. With the help of rains during the spring season, the Rio Grande Turkey population has increased substantially at the Jetton Ranch. Granted, a turkey doesn't catch one's eye based on its beauty. But they are interesting to watch and listen to in their natural habitat. We currently have a group of about 15 turkeys that scratch along the yard fence off and on during the day. They communicate with each other with "peeps" and "clucks". Turkeys aren't overly bright. Or at least that's what I think. A couple of weeks ago, Mike (son and middle child) noticed a turkey trapped between a fence and gate. Silly bird ran back and forth for half an hour before figuring out how to escape from its "trap". When it comes to flight or fight, a turkey will remember it has wings. In the meantime, we are enjoying the visits from our feathered friends and looking forward to watching the toms strut their tail feathers in the near future. Gobble-Gobble!

We have watched thunderstorms build to the west, east, north and west of us for the past several months. Neighbors would report various amounts rain in the area. Our rainfall amount wouldn't be enough to measure in the gauge. Riding the range has been a dusty chore. I tried to order rain from the local feedstore but they told me to stand in line. Our prayers for rain were answered on September 13-16, 2012!! Total amount of rain was a little over 2.50 inches!! Sam was sitting quietly in his chair on Sunday afternoon when I walked through the room. I asked him, "What are you doing? Aren't the Cowboys playing today?" He replied, "Shhh. I'm watching the rain." I sat down as well and remarked, "Manna from Heaven." Sam nodded his head and said, "Yes, ma'am, that it is. That it is."
